The Balkan renewable energy promise

The Balkan renewable energy promise

The Balkan countries could be the next place to be for renewable energy project developers. The region has excellent geographical and climatic conditions and a need for alternative sources of power and heat. Its proximity to the EU market and legal obligation to apply EU internal energy market rules, stemming from membership in the Energy Community, makes it a logical next step for EU's maturing renewable industry. Though, the national and local administrations need to step in to create an enabling environment and allow for this region to witness its own energy transformation. For now, the Balkan countries, along with the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia receive less than 1% of the global renewable energy investment (based on 2014 data).
